Flying a Drone Near an Alabama Airport: A Practical LAANC Guide

Alabama has airports in and around nearly every major population center, plus smaller municipal fields scattered across the state. That matters because a perfectly ordinary place to launch—a subdivision, lake lot, ball field, jobsite, or roadside pull-off—may sit under controlled airspace even when the runway is several miles away.

The good news is that “near an airport” does not automatically mean “no drones.” In many places, recreational and Part 107 pilots can receive FAA authorization through the Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability, better known as LAANC. The authorization may arrive in near real time when the requested altitude is within the published limit for that grid.

The bad news is that guessing is not a safe plan. Airport distance alone does not determine legality, and calling the control tower is not a substitute for the FAA authorization process.

This guide explains how to check an Alabama location before launch, what the altitude numbers mean, when LAANC works, and what to do when it does not.

First, Separate the Launch Property from the Airspace

Two different questions apply to every flight:

  1. Do you have permission to stand on and operate from the property?
  2. Does the airspace allow the flight you want to conduct?

A property owner may give you permission to launch from a parking lot or backyard, but that does not grant permission to enter controlled airspace. The opposite can also happen: the FAA may allow flight at a location, while the landowner, event organizer, park manager, or other property controller prohibits launching there.

LAANC addresses federal airspace authorization. It does not give you permission to trespass, enter a closed site, ignore event rules, or operate from property where drones are prohibited.

“Five Miles from an Airport” Is Not the Current Test

Many people still repeat an old rule about notifying an airport whenever a drone is flown within five miles. That is not the current operating framework.

Today, the important question is whether the location is in controlled airspace. Recreational flyers need prior FAA authorization to fly in Class B, C, D, or surface Class E airspace designated for an airport. Part 107 pilots also need authorization before operating in controlled airspace.

In uncontrolled Class G airspace, a recreational flyer generally may operate at or below 400 feet above ground level while following the other recreational requirements. Part 107 operations remain subject to the applicable Part 107 altitude and operating rules.

A location can be relatively close to a small airport and still be in uncontrolled airspace. Another location farther from a major airport may remain under a controlled-airspace shelf or surface area. That is why a current FAA-supported airspace tool is more useful than measuring a circle around the runway.

What LAANC Actually Does

LAANC connects drone pilots with FAA airspace-authorization services for eligible controlled-airspace locations. FAA-approved service suppliers provide apps or web tools that display airspace information and submit authorization requests.

For a typical request, the pilot selects:

When the request is at or below the altitude shown on the FAA’s UAS Facility Map for that grid, authorization may be issued in near real time. The authorization is not a blanket pass to fly however you want. It applies to the location, altitude, date, time, and operating conditions in the approval.

Pilots must still follow temporary flight restrictions, notices, visual-line-of-sight requirements, weather limitations, operating-over-people rules, Remote ID requirements, and every other rule that applies to the flight.

Understanding the Altitude Grid

Around participating airports, LAANC maps commonly show a grid with altitude values. These values are planning ceilings used by the FAA for authorization decisions. A grid marked “100,” for example, generally indicates that requests at or below 100 feet above ground level may qualify for the normal authorization process.

That number is not permission by itself. You must still submit and receive the authorization before flying in controlled airspace.

A grid showing “0” does not necessarily mean every flight is permanently impossible. It means a normal near-real-time request at that location is not available above zero feet. A Part 107 pilot may be able to submit a further-coordination request for an altitude above the published grid value, up to the regulatory limit, but the FAA reviews that request manually and approval is not guaranteed. Recreational flyers should use the authorization options the FAA provides for their operating category and should not assume further coordination is available to them in the same way.

Choose the lowest altitude that will safely accomplish the purpose. Asking for 75 feet when the shot only needs 40 feet adds no value and can reduce operational margin.

A Practical Alabama Preflight Process

Use the same sequence whether you are near Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Auburn, Dothan, a regional airport, or a smaller municipal field.

1. Decide whether the flight is recreational or non-recreational

A flight is recreational only when it is conducted solely for personal enjoyment. Payment is not the only factor. Photos for a listing, business, school, nonprofit, client, inspection, promotion, or other purpose generally fall outside the recreational exception.

The FAA specifically advises pilots who are unsure to assume Part 107 applies. A Remote Pilot Certificate is required for most non-recreational small-drone operations under Part 107.

2. Check the exact launch point

Do not search only for the nearest airport. Enter the actual address or place a pin at the intended launch location in an FAA-approved airspace tool. Moving even a short distance can place the operation in a different altitude grid.

Check the entire area in which the drone will maneuver, not just the takeoff point. Your authorization and flight plan must cover where the aircraft will actually fly.

3. Review controlled airspace and restrictions

Determine whether the location is controlled or uncontrolled. Then check for temporary flight restrictions, national-security restrictions, stadium restrictions, emergency activity, and other notices that may affect the operation.

LAANC authorization does not override a temporary flight restriction.

4. Request only what you need

Select a realistic start time, duration, operating area, and altitude. Build in enough time to complete the flight without rushing, but do not request a giant area or maximum altitude simply because the app allows it.

5. Read the authorization

Do not treat the approval screen as a generic green light. Read the conditions and confirm the approved ceiling. Save the authorization where you can retrieve it in the field.

6. Recheck immediately before launch

Airspace conditions can change. Recheck the location, weather, temporary restrictions, and notices before takeoff. Confirm that the aircraft is functioning properly, the home point is correct, Remote ID is operating when required, and the flight can remain within visual line of sight.

Common Mistakes Around Alabama Airports

Calling the tower instead of using the authorization system

The FAA states that airspace access for drone operations is handled through established processes such as LAANC and DroneZone, not through an improvised phone call to air traffic control. A tower employee’s awareness is not the same as an FAA authorization.

Assuming a small drone does not count

A drone under 250 grams may avoid federal registration when flown only under the recreational exception, but it is still an aircraft operating in the National Airspace System. Controlled-airspace authorization and other flight rules can still apply.

If the same small drone is used under Part 107, it must be registered.

Believing an authorization removes every other restriction

LAANC solves one part of the compliance picture: controlled-airspace access. It does not waive visual line of sight, maximum altitude, operations-over-people limitations, Remote ID, temporary restrictions, property rules, or safe-operation requirements.

Launching first and requesting later

Authorization must be obtained before the controlled-airspace flight. An app showing that authorization is normally available is not the same as an issued authorization.

Flying to the number shown on the map without approval

A grid value is not an automatic altitude allowance. It indicates the altitude at which a request may be eligible for streamlined processing.

What If LAANC Is Not Available?

Not every airport participates in LAANC, and not every request can be approved automatically.

The FAA’s DroneZone provides a manual authorization route for controlled airspace around airports that are not LAANC-enabled. Manual processing is not near real time, so plan ahead.

Part 107 pilots seeking an altitude above the published facility-map ceiling may be able to submit a further-coordination request through a participating LAANC supplier. The request can be made in advance, is manually reviewed, and may be denied or approved with limitations.

When authorization is unavailable, change the plan. Options may include moving to a legal location in uncontrolled airspace, lowering the requested altitude, changing the operating area, or scheduling the flight after a manual approval is obtained. Do not launch and hope the map was wrong.

Registration, TRUST, and Remote ID Still Matter

Recreational pilots must take the FAA’s Recreational UAS Safety Test, carry proof of passage, and comply with the conditions of the recreational exception.

Drones weighing 0.55 pounds or more must generally be registered. Drones that are required to be registered—or that are registered—must comply with Remote ID unless operated under an applicable exception, such as within an FAA-Recognized Identification Area under the required conditions.

Part 107 pilots register each aircraft used in Part 107 operations and must hold a current Remote Pilot Certificate.

These requirements are separate from LAANC. Completing TRUST or registering a drone does not authorize controlled-airspace access, and receiving LAANC authorization does not replace registration, certification, or Remote ID duties.

A Better Way to Think About Airport-Area Flights

Do not ask, “Am I close to an airport?” Ask four more useful questions:

That approach works across Alabama, from dense urban airspace to small-town municipal airports. It also produces a cleaner decision than relying on distance, hearsay, or a map screenshot saved months ago.

For many routine flights, LAANC makes controlled-airspace access practical. The system works best when the pilot requests a precise area, chooses the lowest useful altitude, reads the approval, and rechecks conditions before launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fly a drone near an Alabama airport?

Possibly. The answer depends on the airspace at the exact flight location. If the location is in controlled airspace, you need prior FAA authorization through LAANC or DroneZone. If it is in uncontrolled Class G airspace, airport proximity alone does not automatically prohibit the flight, but all other applicable rules still apply.

Is LAANC permission automatic?

No. Many requests at or below a published facility-map altitude may be processed in near real time, but you must submit the request and receive an authorization. Some locations, altitudes, or times may require manual review or may not be approved.

Can I call the airport tower for permission?

A phone call is not a substitute for the FAA’s airspace-authorization process. Use LAANC or DroneZone as applicable and follow any coordination conditions included in the authorization.

Do I need LAANC for a drone under 250 grams?

The weight-based registration exception does not eliminate airspace rules. A small drone still needs authorization before operating in controlled airspace. Part 107 aircraft must be registered regardless of being under 250 grams.

Does a LAANC approval let me fly over crowds or beyond visual line of sight?

No. LAANC authorizes access to controlled airspace under stated conditions. It does not waive other operating rules or restrictions.
